So I get told people use collagen ‘creams’ and so I will explain here. Can you boost collagen with a face cream? In a word, NO! Here’s why.
As you age, you may notice your skin doesn’t exactly bounce back like it used to. Maybe you’re starting to get wrinkles, or maybe your skin isn’t full and glowing. This is part of the ageing process, and it is affected by two things. Collagen and elastin are what help with skin elasticity, and give it a smooth and plump look. The reality is that we need to try and keep it healthy and boosted with aesthetic treatments, which can boost collagen or other methods like supplementation.
The size of a collagen molecule is too big to go from the outside into the skin. Hence, I recommend we take collagen powder internally, via supplements instead.
We can however, stimulate collagen, by in-clinic treatments or by homecare with vitamins and minerals such as retinol and growth factors, but boosting collagen with a face cream alone is very unlikely due to the size of the collagen molecule.
So…Can you boost collagen with a face cream?
Collagen plays an important role in providing structure, strength and support throughout your body. The debate around the usefulness of collagen supplements continues. The benefits of collagen may be more hyped in the media than the evidence behind it. More published research studies are needed to show the true health benefits of collagen supplements. Therefore, using a face cream alone will not boost collagen effectively.
In the meantime, you can always help your body make collagen naturally by eating a well-balanced diet full of healthy foods. A well-balanced diet includes chicken, beef, fish, dairy, eggs, beans, leafy greens, other vegetables, whole grains and citrus fruits. To improve damage to the collagen in your skin, don’t smoke, avoid second-hand smoke and wear sunscreen every day. However, you should remember that you can’t necessarily boost collagen through face creams alone.
