The right aftercare makes all the difference between good results and amazing results. Whether you’ve had anti-wrinkle injections, fillers, skin boosters, microneedling or another aesthetic treatment, taking a few simple steps at home can help your skin heal beautifully and prolong longevity.
As a medically trained aesthetics practitioner, I always say that what you do after your treatment is just as important as what happens in the clinic. So, let’s make sure you’re giving your skin the best post-treatment care possible.
🌟 Why is aftercare so essential?
Giving your skin a little more TLC after your treatment helps your skin heal smoothly and ensures results settle well. It’s completely normal to experience some small bruising, redness or swelling afterwards – your skin is just doing its thing! But I do always take steps to minimise this.
Most of this will fade within a few days and bruising should disappear within a week. Be kind to your skin, follow aftercare steps daily, and soon you’ll be on the way to healthy skin and natural looking results. Be ready for the compliments!
🧊 Aftercare for Botox / Anti-wrinkle Injections:
For the first 4 hours after treatment, it’s recommended to stay upright so the product can settle. It’s also important to avoid touching or massaging the area at all for at least 24 hours. Stay away from direct sun exposure, heat, strenuous exercise and alcohol during this period too.
- After the initial 24 hours, make sure to still be cautious and gentle when washing your face and applying makeup.
- A cool compress in 20-minute intervals will help to manage swelling.
- Making exaggerated facial expressions can help work the Botox into the muscles.
- You may feel tightness in your face within a few weeks which means it’s starting to work!
- Stay hydrated, use sun protection, and consider your skincare routine and collagen intake too (ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, peptides and antioxidants are great) This will help support long-term results and healthy-looking skin.
🫧 Aftercare for Dermal Fillers:
With fillers, results are instant. There is often a little swelling and pinkness at the injection site but this usually fades after just a few hours. With lip treatments, this may last until the following day.
Just like above, you should aim to avoid alcohol and heat, stay hydrated and don’t touch the area for the first 24 hours.
Cool packs and soothing cream are also used after your treatment.
Results will then last from 4 months up to a year! This varies person to person and also depends on the amount of product being used and the areas being treated.
Aftercare for more advanced treatments using fillers, like Sculptra, is very similar to this. Make sure to listen to aftercare instructions for every treatment carefully as they can differ slightly depending on the treatment type.
🧴 Aftercare for Microneedling:
Initially, your skin can become very sensitive after microneedling. You should avoid sun exposure and wear sun protection for at least the first two weeks. Use a gentle cleanser and a hydrating barrier-supportive moisturiser. No exfoliants, no makeup and no active ingredients like retinol.
The key to aftercare and getting the best results possible from any treatment is to be patient and carefully follow instructions given to you by your practitioner.
