Our awareness about ‘toxins’ and a general shift to “natural” and “chemical-free” products is increasing. Flawlessceuticals, like many other brands of skin care is committed to your health, so our formulas are all 100% paraben free.

Parabens in skincare

What exactly are parabens?

Parabens are very popular because they help products last longer, they are very common preservatives in cosmetics, usually added in combination with other types of preservatives to give products shelf life so they can be stored in shops for a number of months or even years!

Parabens are usually present in makeup, moisturizers and shampoos. We can easily identify them on these product’s labels. The most common Parabens you may notice on the label are methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben or benzylparaben.

Are they harmful?

Yes they can be.

The Journal of Applied Toxicology has done lots of research and found that Parabens belong to the list of the most health risk ingredients in the cosmetic industry.

In another study it’s been proven that synthetic ingredients can cause:

  • Atopic dermatitis
  • Allergies
  • Thyroid problems
  • Infertility
  • Nervous system disorder
  • Immune system disorder
  • Some Tumours

Parabens have not yet been banned in their entirety because they haven’t yet been proven to be a cause of cancer.

What else do they do?

Skincare should do exactly that! Care. It’s important to look out for ingredients which help support, nourish and hydrate the skin. In skincare products, there are specific ingredients for various skin ‘types’ and it is important these are ‘active’ to treat or repaid different skin conditions. Some of the active ingredients can be diluted, or decreased in effectiveness by paraben preservation.
As an example, you may see fabulous adverts on the TV or in glossy magazines claiming to have a fantastic ingredient like Retinol in it, which is really good in an anti ageing product, however, if it’s something you purchase in a shop it’s more than likely preserved with Parabens which make the retinol less effective and therefore less anti ageing!

What can you do?

The first thing you should do is to pay attention to the ingredients of your favorite cosmetic products and remember that the labels order the ingredients from highest to lowest according to their degree of concentration. Remember that the fact that a product may be presented as natural or organic one, does not mean that it is paraben free so always look for the “paraben free” label.

Thanks to the internet, you can know which products contain or do not contain parabens in their formulation. For example, when entering www.flawlessceuticals.com you can find our product certification “100% paraben free”.

We ask that you always review the ingredients of the cosmetic products you use, and that you become aware that they can be very harmful to your health in the long run and you should always opt for 100% natural products.

All of our products are paraben, cruelty free and vegan.
