Microsclerotherapy

Microsclerotherapy is a safe and long established treatment for thread veins in the legs.

Spider veins and varicose veins occur due to weakness or damage like stretching or expansion in the veins known as phlebeurysm.

 (fleb’yū-rizm),

Pathologic dilation (varix) of a vein.

There are various stages of this.

Stages of leg veins and treatment

Varicose veins are typically larger, but both are externally visible. Both commonly occur in the legs.

Spider veins

Spider veins can be blue, purple, or red. They may appear in the form of thin lines, webs, or branches. People sometimes also refer to them as thread veins. Typically, they are not painful or harmful, but some people may wish to treat them for cosmetic reasons.

Thread vein treatment

About 50% of people will develop these at some point in their lives.  Most often this is due to genetics, or to jobs that involve standing for long periods of time.  They are unlikely to cause any symptoms or medical problems, but they can make people feel self-conscious and limit clothing choices.

Microsclerotherapy involves the injection of a non-toxic irritant solution directly into the problem veins.  This causes the vein walls to stick together and prevents blood passing through. Over a period of weeks the blood vessel is gradually reabsorbed by the body and either reduces or disappears entirely.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What happens during the treatment?

We will clean the skin thoroughly and then one by one inject the veins with a tiny amount of sclerosant.  This is not usually uncomfortable.

N.B. You will be asked to bring a pair of support tights with you to wear straight after the treatment.

What results can I expect?

The results are not immediate. The veins may look bruised and darker before they improve and the treatment may need to be repeated at 8-12 week intervals, dependent on the severity and size of the vein.  However, after a few treatments most patients see a significant improvement and veins that are successfully treated should not reappear.

*Please note this procedure treats existing veins.  It will not stop new veins from developing over time.

Is there any special aftercare required?

You will need to wear support tights for a week after the treatment. We will also ask you to take a 10 minute walk immediately following the procedure.

We advise you to avoid high impact exercise, hot baths, showers, saunas and sunbeds for 2 weeks and no waxing for 4 weeks.  We also ask that you inform us of any forthcoming long- haul travel plans.
